Big Blue Bus Community Meetings

Projected to eventually serve over 64,000 people every day, the arrival of Expo Phase II in Santa Monica will bring about a major change in the ridership of the city’s public transportation system. As such, the Big Blue Bus has been considering changes to its bus system that are meant to accommodate the new rail line. We recently wrote about these proposed changes, which would include the elimination of several low-service lines and the introduction of some new ones for improved connectivity. In order to receive input on these proposals, the Big Blue Bus will be hosting three community meetings this week.

The schedule of the meetings is as follows:

Note: We strongly encourage all of our readers to fill out this survey. In addition to the meetings, this survey is one of the main sources of public input for the project team’s consideration.

City Council Meeting

For the past few months, the City of Santa Monica has been engaged in a struggle for the authority to decide the fate of the Santa Monica Airport. This week’s meeting represents the next step in that struggle. As we discussed just a few days ago, an initiative designed to prevent the City from closing Santa Monica Airport has officially made it on to the November ballot. In response to this initiative, the city government plans on crafting a counter-initiative that will grant the government more control over the 227 acres of publicly owned land, while still requiring some sort of community process to determine how it is used. The full staff report can be read here. This Tuesday, the City Council will finalize the language for the initiative.

When: Tuesday, July 22, 5:30 p.m.
Where: City Hall Council Chambers, 1685 Main St.

Twilight Beach Concert

Santa Monica’s beloved Twilight Concert Series continues this week with Cayucas and Papa. Cayucas began as a solo project of Zach Yudin, a Santa Monica native. Since then, it has expanded into a full band and has been receiving a lot of attention in the indie rock world. To see why, listen to their single “High School Lover:”

If you like what you hear, be sure to head down to the pier this Thursday night! Even if you don’t, we still recommend you give the Twilight Concerts a shot. There’s something pretty magical about sitting on the sand as the sun goes down, surrounded by thousands of smiling faces, enjoying the distinct feeling of community that accompanies such a well-attended event. And we can’t help but mention the free bike valet.

When: Thursday, July 24 at 7:00 p.m. Get to the beach earlier to get a spot.
Where: The south side of the Santa Monica Pier
