Santa Monica Commuter ChallengeCan you give up driving to work and walk instead for a month? If you can, you could win some decent prizes as part of Santa Monica’s 2015 Commuter Challenge, designed to get people to rethink their daily commute.

According to a officials, individuals should register with their employer network at www.commuteSM.com/s/walking. Santa Monica residents employed outside of the city should join the SM Residents Employed Outside of City network.

“From August 1st to August 30th, Santa Monica commuters can log their walking trips in CommuteSM.com to compete in the Walking Commuter Challenge. With every logged trip throughout the month, participants automatically enter weekly drawings for $10 Starbucks gift cards to fuel their strolls,” according to a press release put out by RideAmigos, a local Santa Monica startup which is a co-sponsor of the 2015 Commuter Challenge along with the Santa Monica Bike Center, the City of Santa Monica, the Big Blue Bus, SM Spoke and a dozen other local agencies and businesses.

There are more prizes for those serious contenders.

“At the end of the month, the user with the greatest CO2 savings receives a three-month supply of KIND Snacks. The second place CO2 saver wins two passes to a show at McCabe’s Guitar Shop, and the third place CO2 saver gets a three-session training certificate to Dethrone Basecamp,” the release said. “In addition, two randomly selected participants win movie passes to American Cinematheque theaters. Companies recognized for the highest rates of employee participation will receive tasty treats for all employees, courtesy of KIND Snacks.”

Participants are invited to kick off walking month with breakfast on Tuesday, August 4th at the Colorado Center Palm Courtyard (2425 Colorado Ave) from 9 a.m. to 10:30 am.

The walking challenge is the third installment of Santa Monica’s summer-long 2015 Commuter Challenge, which began in June when the event kicked off with the ridesharing challenge.

During the month of June, participants were challenged to share their commute, instead of driving alone. In July, during the public transit challenge, participants ditched their cars for bus or train.
