Tuneyards Closes out 2015 Twilight Concert Series

This Thursday is the last Pier Concert of the 2015 season, featuring tUnE-yArDs and Avid Dancer.

“Merrill Garbus has performed as tUnE-yArDs since 2009, and that band name has always been synonymous with forward movement—whether because of her explosive performance style or the always-surprising way in which her songs unfold,” according to the Pier’s website.

If you haven’t heard tUnE-yArDs’ music, you may want to listen to this to get an idea what to expect.

tUnE-yArDs will share the stage with Avid Dancer, a band which gives “the sounds of the ’60s and ’70s — shimmering and tremeloed guitars, vocal hooks and AM radio-ready motifs — … a gentle kick in the behind, an update for these times,” according to the Pier site.

Support the Church in Ocean Park

This Saturday, the Church in Ocean Park — the epicenter of progressive activism in Santa Monica for the last 40 years — will be hosting its 17th annual Communitas event to benefit the church.

The nearly century-old church located at the intersection of 2nd and Hill streets was the birthplace of Santa Monica’s famous renters’ rights movement in the 1970s.

To this day, many groups committed to social and environmental justice call the church home, including Santa Monica’s Committee for Racial Justice, the California Climate Change Exchange, and The Kickass Drinking Volunteers Benefactors’ Society.

The Church in Ocean Park opens its space to these groups and others, including Santa Monica High School’s Gay-Straight Alliance, for events all year long and free of charge.

When: Saturday, Sept. 12 from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Where: Church in Ocean Park 235 Hill St., Santa Monica, CA 90405
