Show your support for county funding for desperately-needed affordable housing, support our local Meals on Wheels West at the nonprofit’s annual Monster Bash fundraiser, “Ghostbusters” will be showing at Front Porch Cinema on the Pier, and celebrate Day of the Dead.

County Supervisors Sponsor Motion for Affordable Housing Funding

L.A. County Supervisors Sheila Kuehl, whose district includes Santa Monica, and Mark Ridley-Thomas are sponsoring a motion at Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting that, if approved, would create a new Affordable Housing Programs Budget of $300 million over the next five years and $100 million each following year.

Support Meals on Wheels West

Meals on Wheels West, the local nonprofit that delivers food, provides wellbeing checks and emergency preparedness, and other services for people who are homebound, is celebrating its annual Monster Bash on Thursday.

Funds raised go to help the nonprofit continue to serve its nearly 400 clients throughout Santa Monica and the Westside. The Monster Bash, at Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel Arcadia Ballroom, includes a costume contest, drawings for prizes, complimentary food and drinks, and more.

Watch “Ghostbusters” on the Pier

It’s been 30 years since Harold Ramis’ unique comedy debuted and it has since become a classic. Enjoy the ghostly comedy at the Santa Monica Pier on Friday, October 30 at 6 p.m.

Celebrate Día de los Muertos at Woodlawn Cemetery

The city of Santa Monica will hold its fourth-annual celebration of the Día de los Muertos at Woodlawn Cemetery on Sunday, November 1.

The city’s November 1 celebration is the culmination of a week of events commemorating the occasion. For a complete list of celebrations, click here.

Sunday’s celebration includes a robust program.

“Starting with an opening procession and ceremonial blessing led by Ketzaliztlidancers, the event features the son jarocho music of Veracruz, Mexico with Conjunto Jardin, the all-female stringed mariachi group Las Colibri, and Day of the Dead inspired folk tales, myths, legends, and personal stories, in both English and Spanish, with storyteller Antonio Sacre. Craft workshops include offerings for loved ones who have passed, calavera masks and adding stories of loved ones to the communal memory wall,” according the cemetery’s website.

“There will also be a documentary screening on how families in Mexico prepare for this holiday and a special guest appearance by La Catrina, the satirical and elegant female skeleton. Independent radio journalist and DJ, Betto Arcos will be emceeing and sharing his own Day of the Dead stories and memories. Fresh tamales, tacos, pan de muerto and aquas frescas will be available for purchase,” the site reads.
