Coming up this week, things are getting real on Expo line phase 2, we are throwing a party to celebrate our own local shared streets champions, and the Santa Monica League of Women Voters will be honoring the Women Who Shape Santa Monica.

Metro Ramps Up Pre-Revenue Testing

Starting on Monday, March 21, Metro will be ramping up testing on Expo phase 2, according to Metro’s The Source. With the opening only two months away (May 20), Metro began running trains Monday at regular service frequencies (every 12 to 20 minutes) during regular service hours (4 a.m. to 2 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and 4 a.m. to 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday). So, whether you are walking, biking, or driving near the tracks, remember to always be on the lookout and obey all traffic signals and signs.

Streetsies Award Celebration

We’ve been talking a lot about this event, but it’s because we are so excited. On Thursday, March 24 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., we will have a party — food and drink! — at Cyclehop’s west coast headquarters to celebrate some of 2015’s Streetsie winners. Assemblymember Richard Bloom, Cyclehop, and Hulu will all be honored at our party for their work in promoting shared streets.

Bloom, both at the state level and through his work on the Santa Monica City Council (1999-2012), has been a champion of sustainable and active transportation. He was also integral in bringing about Breeze Bike Share (operated by Cyclehop), Los Angeles County’s first public bike-share system. Now, Beverly Hills and Long Beach have begun to follow suit, adopting bike-share systems also run by Cyclehop. And Hulu, located in Santa Monica, is helping to support sustainable transportation by generously supporting Breeze Bike Share to the tune of $675,000 a year. Tickets to Thursday’s party are available here. We hope you can make it.

Women Who Shape Santa Monica

The Santa Monica League of Women Voters will be celebrating this week as well. The League will host its annual Women Who Shape Santa Monica awards on Thursday, March 24.

“Our city is truly fortunate to have been the beneficiary of the gifts and lifework of these remarkable women,” said LWVSM President Ann Williams. “Every aspect of our civic lives has been enhanced by our honorees.”

This year, the League will be honoring: former Instructor of Early Childhood Education at Santa Monica College and co-founder of Connections for Children Betsy Hiteshew, former City Manager Susan McCarthy, Pastor of the Church in Ocean Park Janet McKeithen and former mayor and current City Councilmember Pam O’Connor.

The event will begin at 7 p.m. A donation of $40 can be paid before the event by PayPal at www.lwvsantamonica.org. A donation of $50 can be paid at the door by cash, check or credit card. Please R.S.V.P. by contacting (310) 692-1494 or email, league@lwvsantamonica.org.
