It was a tough week around the country, and, frankly around the world. The Santa Monica Area Interfaith Council will hold a vigil on the Third Street Promenade this Monday.

Vigil Against Violence and Hate

In light of recent violence around our country, the Santa Monica Area Interfaith Council will hold a vigil against violence and hate on the Third Street Promenade, north of Arizona Avenue, on Monday.
Hosted by Santa Monica’s Church in Ocean Park, the event is open to everyone regardless of one’s religion — or lack thereof.

“As religious leaders of various faith traditions, we come together to grieve and to say enough is enough! Prayers, tears, songs and stories will be shared,” according to the Facebook event. “We will meet north of Arizona and the community is invited. You are welcome to join us.”

The vigil is scheduled for 6 to 7:30 p.m.

11th Annual International Teen Film Festival

Santa Monica welcomes the International Teen Film Festival back this week for its 11th year.

“This year the Festival will screen 36 short films (average length is 4 minutes) out of over 500 submissions from all across the United States as well as Hong Kong, Pakistan, India, Russia, Ireland, England, Iran, Thailand, Mexico, Canada and more. Local filmmakers from Santa Monica High School, New Roads High School, Harvard Westlake and other area schools are also represented,” according to a press release put out by the city.

The films will be screened in two different showings.

“The first will be Saturday, July 9th from 7-9PM at the Ann & Jerry Moss Theater at New Roads High School, located at 3131 Olympic Blvd. in Santa Monica. (www.mosstheater.com) This screening is rated PG-13 due to occasional violence and mature themes,” officials said.

“The second screening will take place Sunday, July 10th from 2-4PM at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Auditorium at the Santa Monica Main Public Library, 601 Santa Monica Blvd. This screening will feature animated works, documentaries and short films rated G and appropriate for all ages,” officials said.

Following the Sunday screenings, there will be a short awards ceremony where filmmakers will receive recognition in more than a dozen categories, including “Best of the Fest”, “Best Animation”, “Best Documentary”, “Best Music / Video Experimental” and “Best Live Action.”

The event is free and open to the public.
