The Santa Monica College (SMC) Music Department is pleased to present a variety of spring performances in June in The Broad Stage or The Edye at the SMC Performing Arts Center, 1310 11th Street (at Santa Monica Boulevard), Santa Monica. The concerts include performances by the SMC Jazz Vocal Ensemble, SMC Concert Chorale, SMC Symphony Orchestra, SMC Chamber Choir, and an SMC Vocal Department Showcase.

The Music Department also joins the SMC Theatre Arts Department for four SMC Musical Theatre Workshop performances in the Theatre Arts Studio Stage, located on the SMC main campus at 1900 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica

The June events are:

  • Friday, June 1, at 7:30 p.m.in The Broad Stage: SMC Jazz Vocal Ensemble. Under the direction of Andreas Preponis, SMC’s award-winning jazz vocal ensemble — backed by LA-area jazz musicians — blends voices in a program of jazz specifically arranged for four-part harmony. (Tickets are $10.)
  • Friday, June 1, at 8 p.m.,Saturday, June 2, at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., & Sunday, June 3, at 2 p.m. in the Theatre Arts Studio Stage: SMC Musical Theatre Workshop, directed by SMC theatre arts instructor Perviz Sawoski, with music direction by SMC music instructor Karen Benjamin. SMC Theatre Arts and Music students present a program of solos, duets, and ensemble selections from the musical theatre genre. (Tickets are $10 advance, $13 at door.)
  • Saturday, June 2, at 7:30 p.m.in The Broad Stage: SMC Concert Chorale: “Faith, Hope, Love: The Voice of Brahms,” under the baton of Jeremiah Selvey. Offering a concert experience of Johannes Brahms, interpreted through a modern sociocultural perspective, the SMC Concert Chorale will perform Ein deutsches Requiem, and theSMC Chamber Choir will perform excerpts of Liebeslieder Wälzer. The two ensembles will also join forces to perform Santa Monica composer Eric Whitacre’s “i thank You God for most this amazing day.” (Tickets are $10.)
  • Sunday, June 3, at 4 p.m.in The Broad Stage: SMC Symphony Orchestra: “A Tale of One City – but Two Symphonies.” Under the baton of Brian Stone, the orchestra presents one of the world’s greatest cities — London — as musically expressed by a native Londoner in 1913 with Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “A London Symphony” (Symphony #2), and by a visiting Viennese in 1795 with Franz Joseph Haydn’s “London Symphony” (Symphony #104). (Tickets are $10.)
  • Tuesday, June 5, at 7:30 p.m.in The Edye: SMC Chamber Choir: “L.O.V.E. is L.O.V.E.” conducted by Jeremiah Selvey. Through the lens of Liebeslieder Wälzer by Johannes Brahms, along with other selections, the evening’s selections explore the universality of love as the glue that holds our lives and society together. Warning: This concert experience may not be a typical choir performance. (Tickets are $10.)
  • Wednesday, June 6, at 7:30 p.m.in The Edye: SMC Vocal Department Showcase, directed by Diana Zaslove Kahn. SMC’s advanced voice students perform classical, jazz, musical theatre, and contemporary commercial songs. (Tickets are $10.)
