For half a decade, Santa Monica Next was the place for progressives to turn to for news about what was going on in Santa Monica. Under the leadership of Jason Islas, the news website published stories daily focusing on the people, politics and events that determined how Santa Monica was growing, modernizing its transportation infrastructure and working to lead in the fight on Climate Change.

Following an election that saw the 2022 election, which saw the city fend off its own version of the red wave, we feel it’s time to bring Santa Monica Next back online. But, as a non-profit news source we’re counting on you to help make that happen. Please consider making a donation to support us, today. Our goal is to reach $10,000 in new donations and we’re off to a good start with a pledge of $10,000. All donations are tax deductible, and regardless of whether or not we reach our goal, every cent will be spent on Santa Monica Next.

We plan on re-launching Santa Monica Next on February 1, 2023 and will let you know as we get closer to the launch date and the details of our kickoff party.

But we’re not just looking for reader donations to make a new Next a reality. If you would like to donate time, host an event, or contribute pieces email damien@streetsblog.org. We’re also looking for new advertisers and sponsors and if you have a lead or would like a meeting or more information just let me know.

This last election shows how important having a progressive news source that goes beyond the headlines and press releases in its coverage. Without a budget, volunteers broke news and provided analysis that somehow eluded the various legacy media outlets through the city including Jason Mastbaum’s piece showing an out-of-town lawyer intimidating voters asking candidates questions, Juan Matute’s piece demonstrating how dark money PAC’s were influencing the school board race, and my analysis of how new political groups were stealing SMRR’s branding to promote conservative candidates.

It’s an exciting time for Santa Monica, and we believe Next will be an important part of helping the city grow into its future. If you’d like to help us, consider donating time or treasure to prepare us for 2023 and beyond.
